During the reporting period September/October 2026, new multidisciplinary research on the Indus Valley Culture (IVC / Harappan Civilization) yielded crucial advancements in four key areas:

1. Archaeology & Urbanism: The evaluation of new excavation campaigns and radiocarbon dates in Mohenjo-Daro (Sindh, Pakistan) confirmed that the massive, approximately 7-meter-thick mudbrick perimeter wall west of the Stupa Mound – interpreted by Mortimer Wheeler in 1950 as a flood protection embankment – represents a fortified city wall of the Kot Diji phase (ca. 3300–2600 BCE). This shifts the beginning of urban monumental architecture at the site significantly further back into the 4th millennium BCE. In parallel, renewed excavations by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) in the port city of Lothal and at Early Harappan sites such as Lakhapar (Kutch) expanded the understanding of regional trade and craft continuities.
2. Archaeogenetics & Paleoanthropology: Under the coordination of the Anthropological Survey of India (AnSI) and the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP), skeletons recovered from the necropolis of Rakhigarhi (Mound 7) in summer 2026 were moved into the laboratory analysis phase. The ongoing aDNA and isotope analyses are intended to significantly expand the statistical robustness of the core genetic profile of the Harappan population (two-stream model: autochthonous South Asian hunter-gatherers [AASI] + pre-agricultural Zagros-/Iran-related pastoralist and farmer component) and clarify mobility patterns through strontium and oxygen isotopes.
3. Epigraphy & Script Research: Prompted by the Iravatham Mahadevan Prize, awarded in 2025, the use of machine learning, NLP, and discriminative statistical models for deciphering the Indus script has intensified. New computational syntheses and sign-alignment models systematically test the hypothesis of a Proto-Dravidian language basis against non-linguistic symbol systems, with the academic community insisting on strict philological validation standards.
4. Paleoclimatology & De-Urbanization: High-resolution paleoclimate profiles and speleothem data (including from Dharamjali Cave) as well as BSIP sediment cores provide evidence of a series of intense, decades-long dry periods between 4400 and 3400 BP. In particular, a 113-year drought cycle in the 2nd millennium BCE precisely coincides with the transformation and settlement shift from the central and western Indus Basin eastward into the Ganges succession.

2.1 Mohenjo-Daro: Redating of the Kot Diji Fortification ​

One of the most remarkable archaeological re-evaluations concerns the chronology of Mohenjo-Daro. Under the direction of the Directorate General of Antiquities and Archaeology Sindh in cooperation with international specialists (including Jonathan Mark Kenoyer), systematic re-excavations and five new high-precision AMS-14C dates were carried out at the western edge of the Stupa Mound.

The excavation results revise a misunderstanding over 70 years old: the approximately 7-meter-thick mudbrick structure uncovered by Sir Mortimer Wheeler in 1950 was then classified as a mere river embankment against monsoon floods. The new stratigraphic and architectural analyses now prove that it is a monumental city fortification wall, already dated to the pre-classical Kot Diji phase (ca. 3300–2600 BCE). Mohenjo-Daro thus did not emerge suddenly as a planned urban blueprint project of the mature Harappan phase (from 2600 BCE), but has at least seven centuries of longer, continuous settlement and fortification history.

2.2 Regional Craft Centers and Maritime Trade Routes: Lothal and Kutch ​

In Gujarat, the ASI has intensified excavations in the ancient port city of Lothal to re-document the port structures, tidal canalization, and bead manufacturing facilities in preparation for the establishment of the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC). The new findings confirm that Lothal continued to function as a supra-regional transshipment center for semi-precious stones (carnelian, agate), faience, and marine shells even during the transitional phase to post-urbanism (after 1900 BCE). At the same time, finds from Lakhapar in the Kutch district demonstrate that fortified outposts had already opened up the arid coastal hinterland for maritime raw material transport around 3300 BCE.

3. Archaeogenetics & Paleoanthropology ​

3.1 The Rakhigarhi Mound 7 Project: Expansion of the Genomic Sample ​

Archaeogenetic research into the Indus Civilization has so far primarily relied on a single skeleton directly sequenced from Rakhigarhi (individual I6113) and eleven genetic migrants ("Indus Periphery Cline") from Shahr-i-Sokhta (Iran) and Gonur Depe (BMAC, Turkmenistan). This sample showed a distinct profile: a basal West Eurasian component that diverged from Iranian pastoralist lineages before the development of agriculture, combined with autochthonous South Asian hunter-gatherer ancestry (AASI), completely free of Pontic-Caspian Steppe ancestry or Anatolian early farmer gene flow.

To confirm the representativeness of this finding, the ASI, after the conclusion of the 2025/2026 excavation campaign, transferred three complete skeletons and other osteological remains from the necropolis of Mound 7 in Rakhigarhi to the central anthropological institute AnSI in Kolkata. In collaboration with the Birbal Sahni Institute of Palaeosciences (BSIP) and international working groups, the following are currently underway:

• Optimized aDNA extraction: Use of ultrashort-fragment methods to counter the extreme thermal DNA degradation conditions of the Indian alluvium.
• Strontium and oxygen isotope analyses: Examination of tooth enamel to differentiate local inhabitants from long-distance migrants from the Balochistan mountains or the coast.
• Paleopathological profiling: Recording of nutritional deficiencies and infection markers in late urbanism.

3.2 Methodological Discussion: qpAdm Modeling and the AASI Reference ​

Current methodological work delves into the stability of qpAdm rotation models for South Asian populations. Since modern proxies (such as the isolated Onge of the Andaman Islands) must be used for the AASI component due to the lack of fossil DNA from undisturbed Pleistocene finds, population geneticists are evaluating proximal models in which the Indus Periphery individuals serve as the primary reference for the indigenous Indian population. The analyses underscore the demographic continuity of Harappan genetics in the modern South Asian population across all language families.

4. Epigraphy, Script Research & Language Hypotheses ​

4.1 Computational Models and the Iravatham Mahadevan Prize ​

Since the announcement of the one-million-dollar Iravatham Mahadevan Prize in early 2025, computational epigraphy of the Indus script has seen an unprecedented increase in modeling approaches:

5. Paleoclimatology, Environmental History & De-Urbanization ​

5.1 Centuries-Long River Droughts and the 4.2k Climate Event ​

A groundbreaking study from Gandhinagar in Communications Earth & Environment provided new quantitative data on the hydroclimatic stress on the Indus Civilization. Monthly Research Report – Out of India Theory (OIT) vs. Aryan Invasion/Migration Theory (AIT/AMT) ​

Research Profile: academic search (bioRxiv, Nature, Science, Cell, PNAS, Journal of Human Genetics and related indices), web search with monthly filter, and review of original/institutional websites. Older works are only used as methodological and historical context.

Executive Summary ​

• Within the strict reporting window, no new peer-reviewed study was found in Nature, Science, Cell, PNAS, or bioRxiv that directly decides between OIT or AIT/AMT. The most important recent peer-reviewed reference remains the Science Advances study on Ladakh published in July: it dates an approximately half Tibetan- and half South Asian-related admixture to about 2,800 years ago, but assigns neither a specific language nor a direct "Aryan" identity (Science Advances).
• New and noteworthy is a Zenodo preprint on the genetic history of Punjabis (August 28). It synthesizes known findings on Indus, AASI, Iranian-related, and later Steppe-related ancestry and explicitly emphasizes that R1a proves neither ethnicity nor "Aryan" identity; as a preprint, it is not a peer-reviewed primary study (Zenodo).
• The September report on a lecture by Gyaneshwer Chaubey mentions mitochondrial haplogroups M4b1, M49, and M61 in four teeth from sites in the Syrian Euphrates region. This is an interesting indication of mobility between South and West Asia, but due to a lack of published methodology, dataset description, and peer review, it is not yet reliable evidence for a specific migration direction or language spread (Economic Times/ANI).
• For Rakhigarhi, three human skeletons have been forwarded for scientific examination, including DNA tests; results are not yet available. The report should therefore be treated as a project announcement, not as a genetic finding (Panchjanya).
• Archaeologically, the most important new clues are more regionally historical than migration-decisive: Barbadgaon in Kutch is so far only provisionally dated to the 11th–13th century CE and not systematically excavated; Kalibangan is reframed historiographically in an opinionated article. Both contribute to the history of landscapes, contacts, and knowledge production, but do not decide between OIT and AMT (India Today; ThePrint).

New Studies & Finds ​

1. Genetics: Punjabi Preprint and the Limits of Population Genetic Oversimplifications ​

Zahid Hussain's text Origin of the Punjabis: A Detailed Genetic Perspective, published on Zenodo on August 28, is designated as a preprint and not a journal article. It is therefore relevant for monthly observation but should be classified significantly below a peer-reviewed primary study in terms of evidence (Zenodo Metadata; DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.22136825).

The preprint summarizes Punjabi history as a multi-layered model: deep South Asian hunter-gatherer ancestry (AASI as a statistically inferred, not directly sampled component), Iranian-related ancestry in the Indus region, and later incoming Steppe-related ancestry. For the single IVC-associated genome, the lack of detectable Steppe ancestry is emphasized; at the same time, the text itself points out that a single IVC genome cannot represent the entire genetic diversity of a large-scale civilization (Zenodo Preprint).

Particularly useful for the debate is the methodological restraint: the preprint explicitly states that "R1a" is a paternal lineage and not an ethnicity; no single Y-chromosome can define the origin of the Punjabis. It also warns against treating ANI and ASI as historical peoples or nations. These statements do not support a simple OIT narrative, but they also correct a popular AIT/AMT variant that directly derives a complete ethnic or cultural identity from a single marker (Zenodo Preprint).

2. Indus–Mesopotamia: Lecture on Four Teeth from Syria ​

A report disseminated by ANI on September 12 about a lecture by BHU geneticist Gyaneshwer Chaubey mentions a joint investigation with Polish researchers. Teeth from four individuals from Tell Ashara (ancient Terqa) and Tell Masaikh (ancient Kar-Ashurnasirpal) in the Syrian Middle Euphrates Valley were analyzed; the time span is given as approximately 2650 BCE to 700 CE (Economic Times/ANI).

The report names the South Asian mitochondrial haplogroups M4b1, M49, and M61 and interprets them as an indication that, in addition to goods, people were also mobile along the known Meluhha trade routes. The statement is historically plausible as a research hypothesis, but genetically still narrow: four teeth, mitochondrial rather than comprehensive autosomal data, unclear contamination and dating details, and no publication or DOI mentioned in the report. Thus, the finding is not a test of the language question and certainly not a direct test of OIT versus AMT; if the announced analysis is methodologically confirmed, it initially proves contact and mobility (Economic Times/ANI).

3. Kashmir/Burzahom: Peer-Reviewed Mitogenome Study as September Context ​

The Burzahom study, revisited in September, was not newly published but appeared in Scientific Reports in 2025: Ancient mitogenomes from Neolithic, megalithic and medieval burials suggest complex genetic history of Kashmir valley, India, DOI 10.1038/s41598-025-00568-4. The original study examined twelve skeletal samples; complete mitochondrial genomes could be reconstructed from four samples – one Neolithic, one Megalithic, and two Medieval individuals (Scientific Reports).

The authors report, among others, M65a in Neolithic Burzahom3 (2009–2002 cal. BCE), U2b2 in Megalithic Burzahom7 (547–580 cal. CE), M30 in Med1, and W4 in Med2. Phylogenetic relationships to Kashmir, Swat, Central Asia, and BMAC are discussed; a possible Central Asian connection is derived from W4, but not a clear migration route (Scientific Reports).

The finding is doubly important for the debate. First, it shows that regional continuity and far-reaching connections can coexist. Second, it shows why mitogenome data does not lead to a simple "population replacement" or language assignment: only four complete mitogenomes, particularly few medieval samples, and a connection to Roopkund explicitly described as inconclusive limit the scope of interpretation (Scientific Reports).

4. Rakhigarhi: Three Skeletons for Examination – Results Pending ​

A report from September 14 states that the Archaeological Survey of India has sent three human skeletons recovered from Rakhigarhi to the Anthropological Survey of India in Kolkata for detailed examination. Osteological studies and DNA tests for ancestry, relationships, diet, lifestyle, and physical development are planned (Panchjanya).

The report does not mention the context of the findings, the sex and age of the individuals, laboratory protocol, sequencing, radiocarbon dates, or statistical results. The designation as "Saraswati-Sindhu Civilization" and the claim that Rakhigarhi is the largest city of this civilization due to an area of over 350 hectares are also not supported by a peer-reviewed evaluation there. For OIT/AMT, therefore, only this can be noted: new sampling and analysis project, no results yet (Panchjanya).

5. Archaeology: Barbadgaon in Kutch and the Need for Absolute Dating ​

India Today reported on September 18 about Barbadgaon near Sir Creek in western Kutch. Mentioned are about 100 human skeletons, heads oriented westward, terracotta rice processing tools, brick structures, pottery, lamps, and a copper coin. The attribution to the 11th–13th century CE and the Soomra context is explicitly provisional; systematic excavation and absolute dating are still pending (India Today).

The significance lies primarily in environmental and entanglement history: rice processing suggests a formerly different water and settlement landscape; nearby Harappan sites show that the region was already settled millennia earlier. However, statements about earlier Indus river corridors or the course of a Garah distributary are marked as research proposals in the article and would need to be verified by paleochannel mapping, sediment analyses, and dating (India Today).

6. Kalibangan: Historiographical Reassessment Instead of New Primary Excavation ​

The article Kalibangan was hiding in plain sight, published on September 14, is marked as Opinion. It reconstructs the research history from Tessitori's investigations to the ASI excavations from 1961 to current demands for re-excavation and museum construction. The chronologies, measurements, and artifact interpretations mentioned there should therefore be read as a journalistic-historiographical presentation and not as new peer-reviewed excavation results (ThePrint).

For the OIT/AMT debate, the article is nevertheless insightful: it shows how place names, the Ghaggar-Chautang landscape, "Sarasvati" interpretations, and the visibility of Kalibangan are intertwined in national narratives. This intertwining is a subject of the history of science and public knowledge production; it does not replace chronology, language reconstruction, or population genetic analysis (ThePrint).

7. Linguistics/Philology: No Direct September Contribution, but an Adjacent New Article ​

The academic search yielded no new peer-reviewed contribution in the reporting window that directly re-decides Sanskrit dating, Vedic chronology, or the OIT/AMT question. As a professionally adjacent contribution, just outside the window, Oskar Podlasiński's article on Ogamadecā, published on July 31, should be noted. He analyzes a Sanskrit translation from a Middle Persian context based on Avesta citations and examines phonological, morphological, and syntactic deviations from the Pāṇinian system (Comparative Indo-European Studies; DOI: 10.12797/CIS.28.2026.01.12).

The article concerns Indo-Iranian textual tradition but, according to the abstract, does not address chronology, OIT, AIT, or AMT. Its relevance is methodological: linguistic forms must be placed in contexts of transmission, translation, and usage; a single Sanskrit word or a later textual form cannot simply be read as direct evidence for a Bronze Age migration (Comparative Indo-European Studies).

State of the Debate ​

Archaeogenetic Consensus and its Scope ​

The most robust framework currently remains a mixture and contact model, not a model of complete population replacement. The 2019 Cell study on Rakhigarhi/I6113 assigned the individual to an Indus-related genetic lineage that combined Iranian-related and deep South Asian components and had no detectable Steppe ancestry; at the same time, the study emphasized that a single individual does not represent the entire Indus population (Cell).

The large 2019 Science study modeled 523 newly sampled ancient individuals and a total of 837 ancient genomes. It linked Steppe-related ancestry in northern South Asia with later populations, particularly those visible after the mature Indus period, without deriving a simple equation of genetics, language, and "Aryan" identity (Science).

The Science Advances study on Old Ladakh shifts the regional focus: it finds an approximately half South Asian- and half Tibetan-related ancestry in seven high-quality individuals; the admixture is dated to about 2,800 years ago. North Indian Brahmins and Dogra serve as statistical proxy sources, not as identity designations for the ancient people. The study does not assign a specific language and does not provide an independent quantitative Steppe estimate for Old Ladakh (Science Advances).

This evidence is compatible with a migration or multiple gene flows from the Steppe to South Asia, but does not necessitate a military "invasion." In serious research, "invasion," "migration," elite mobility, gradual gene flow, and cultural diffusion are analytically distinguished. Conversely, regional genetic continuity does not refute the existence of later migrations. OIT can point to local continuity, language change without major demographic displacement, or reverse diffusion; however, as a comprehensive model of the spread of Indo-Iranian languages from India, it must explain genetics, archaeology, and historical linguistics together.

R1a/L657, Mitogenomes, and Language ​

R1a and its sub-branches are uniparental markers. They can reveal historical male lineages and demographic processes but are neither ethnicities nor language families. The current Punjabi preprint explicitly states this limitation and rejects the equation "R1a = Aryan" (Zenodo Preprint).

Mitogenomes such as M65, U2b, M30, or W4 primarily capture maternal lineages. The Burzahom study shows that such lineages can persist regionally over long periods and at the same time be connected to Swat, Central Asia, and BMAC; it cannot derive a language history or overall population structure from this alone (Scientific Reports).

Archaeology, Chronology, and "Sarasvati" ​

Site continuity, river reconstructions, pottery styles, and ritual findings are important data, but each is context-dependent. A site on the Ghaggar, a fire pit, or a horse depiction does not automatically prove a specific linguistic community. Conversely, the absence of an expected artifact can weaken a hypothesis without refuting it alone. Crucial are stratigraphic contexts, absolute datings, comparative series, and the distinction between a find, its interpretation, and later national framing.

Methodological Assessment ​

1. Sample Size and Representativeness: One Rakhigarhi individual, four Burzahom mitogenomes, or four Syrian teeth do not allow generalization to "the Indus population," "the Aryans," or "the Punjabis." The size and spatial distribution of ancient genomes in South Asia remain central bottlenecks (Cell; Scientific Reports).
2. Proxy Problem: AASI is not a directly sampled ancient population. qpAdm models use proxy sources like Onge; thus, percentages are model- and proxy-dependent. The current qpAdm guide recommends sensitivity analyses across multiple proxy sets and a formulation like "15% AASI, proxied by Onge," not a seemingly exact historical ethnicity (Ancestrify).
3. Genetics is not Language: A gene flow can be accompanied by language change, but does not have to be. Statistical proximity to modern Brahmins, Dogra, or "Steppe" reference groups is not a naming of the ancient individuals. The Ladakh study explicitly states this limitation (Science Advances).
4. Uniparental Markers: R1a/L657 and mtDNA haplogroups represent single genealogical paths. They are useful for lineage and mobility questions but not sufficient for ethnicity, caste, religion, or linguistic affiliation (Zenodo Preprint; Scientific Reports).
5. Dating: Provisional periodizations, as with Barbadgaon, must not circulate as absolute chronology. OIT/AMT arguments require synchronized find contexts and robust dating intervals, not just typological or political assignments (India Today).
6. Source Hierarchy: Peer-reviewed primary studies and supplementary data take precedence over press reports, preprints, opinion pieces, and blogs. In September, for example, the search yielded a hit for "BMAC consensus guidelines," which actually referred to Bone Marrow Aspirate Concentrate in regenerative orthopedics and had nothing to do with the Bactria-Margiana Archaeological Complex (The Wire/PTI). Such hits show why acronyms must be contextually checked.

Open Questions ​

• When and in what regional waves did Steppe-related ancestry arrive in South Asia? More directly dated genomes from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Kashmir, Swat, Gujarat, and the Ganges region are needed.
• How great was the intra-Indus genetic diversity? Further Rakhigarhi samples are needed before statements about "the" Harappan population or an absence of Steppe ancestry can be generalized.
• What is the significance of R1a-Z93/L657 sub-branches in well-dated ancient samples, and how can they be linked to autosomal ancestry and archaeological contexts?
• How strongly do genetic continuity, language change, and cultural adoption overlap? This requires joint models from historical linguistics, archaeology, and population genetics.
• Which local ancestry components are currently obscured by unsuitable proxies? Sensitivity analyses with various AASI and Steppe proxies are indispensable.
• Which Rakhigarhi samples were actually handed over to which laboratory, and when will sequencing data, radiocarbon dates, contamination controls, and supplementary tables be published?
• Can the Syrian mitochondrial findings mentioned in the lecture be verified in a complete publication with raw data, contamination controls, and precise provenance?
• Which find contexts and absolute datings clarify the late and post-Harappan transitions better than the current, often politicized grand narrative?
• How will textbooks be balanced between meaningful decolonization, plural knowledge history, and uncritical civilization glorification?

Public and Political Reception ​

NCERT Director Dinesh Prasad Saklani announced in an interview on September 4 that the 2026 textbooks would include a stronger integration of "Indian Knowledge Systems." Mathematics, astronomy, medicine, architecture, music, environmental knowledge, and historical units on Varna, Jati, Rajdharma, and Kautilya were mentioned, among others. The presentation also emphasizes neither rejecting external knowledge nor uncritically glorifying the past; a direct new OIT/AMT textbook dispute is not documented in this interview (Matrix News).

A feature in The Revealer in September describes the transnational spread of Hindu nationalist networks and narratives. It covers diaspora, social media, victimhood and demographic narratives, and campaigns to reshape historical perceptions; it is a journalistic analysis and not a new study on OIT/AMT (The Revealer). For the public debate, this point is nevertheless relevant: genetic and archaeological findings are often incorporated into larger civilization and identity narratives. Scientifically, therefore, it must always be separated what a dataset shows, what an author concludes from it, and what political identity work follows.

Reference to the Malinar Lecture (UZH) ​

UZH lists Angelika Malinar as an emeritus professor of Indology; her official research fields include Hinduism in history and the present, Sanskrit literature, Indian philosophy, and exchange relations between India and Europe in modernity (University of Zurich – Profile Angelika Malinar). In the sense of a critical-historical lecture perspective, the OIT/AMT debate is therefore not just a question of "which people lived where first," but also a case study on the construction of categories.

Three observations are particularly relevant for the lecture: First, "Hinduism," "Arya," "Indian," "Dravidian," "Brahmin," and "Sarasvati-Sindhu" are not timeless, self-explanatory units, but must be contextualized textually, institutionally, and reception-historically. Second, modern civilization narratives arise from the connection of philology, archaeology, colonial knowledge, nationalism, and contemporary politics. Third, an objective presentation requires thinking about continuity and change simultaneously: genetic continuity can coexist with migration, language change, and religious new formations. Precisely this analytical separation corresponds to a critical construction of the subject "Hinduism," instead of presupposing it as an unchanging biological or cultural essence (University of Zurich – Profile Angelika Malinar).

(July 24, 2026; just outside the strict 30-day window as context): Ten genomes from the Old Lady Spider Cave in Ladakh show a rare, approximately 50:50 split Tibetan–North Indian ancestry for present-day South Asians; admixture began according to segment length analysis approximately 2,800 years ago. This concerns a Himalayan contact zone and is not a direct test of the OIT/AIT question for the Bronze Age.

In August, two important ongoing aDNA projects became public: Madurai Kamaraj
University reported preliminary results of approximately 75,000 markers from human remains from the
sites of Konthagai/Keeladi, Adichanallur, and Sivagalai; the nine announced
scholarly articles had not yet been published. At BHU, samples were taken from an ancient Rajghat
skeleton; radiocarbon dating, aDNA, and isotope analyses are still pending.

The ongoing transfer of new Rakhigarhi remains to the Anthropological Survey of
India (AnSI) is scientifically significant but does not yet provide new genetic
results: Eight burials were reported in the 2025/26 campaign, and three complete

A new overview by Tyagi and Rai explicitly discusses the methodological limits
of aDNA in South Asia, as well as competing interpretations of Rakhigarhi, Swat, and
caste endogamy. A 2026 contribution by David B. Buyaner attacks the BMAC
substrate hypothesis using a specific word ("brick"); this is a philological
counter-contribution, but not new evidence for OIT. (Tyagi & Rai, Proceedings of the Indian National

The evidence remains asymmetrical: Established research rejects a violent
"invasion" as too crude a model but considers a gradual immigration or
spread of Steppe-related populations after the peak of the Indus Civilization
to be the currently best-supported explanation for the genetic and linguistic historical findings.

OIT arguments for local continuity, Sarasvati, and Vedic chronology remain important
counter-positions, but are not the majority view in international scholarly literature.

New Studies & Finds

1. Ladakh: Himalaya as a Contact Zone, Not an OIT/AIT Decider
   Patterson, Mushrif-Tripathy, Devers et al. published on July 24, 2026, in Science Advances
   the study “Ancient genomes from Ladakh reveal 2800-year-old admixture between Tibetans
   and South Asians” (DOI: 10.1126/sciadv.aeb3636). Ten genomes from the Old
   Lady Spider Cave at approximately 4,000 m altitude were examined; the individuals date approximately 1,500 years before
   present. They were genetically relatively homogeneous and showed approximately equal proportions of a
   population well represented by present-day North Indians, and an ancient Tibetan-
   related population. From the length of inherited DNA segments, it is concluded that the
   admixture began at the latest about 50 generations earlier, i.e., around 2,800 BP.

   For the OIT/AIT debate, the finding is indirect: It shows that South Asia's genesis was
   shaped by regional contact zones and multiple, temporally offset admixtures. It
   proves neither that these people were "Aryans" nor when Indo-Aryan languages entered the
   subcontinent. At the same time, the study warns against a monolithic "Steppe to
   India" schema: The Himalayan region was an independent corridor between Tibet,
   North India, and Inner Asia. The sample of ten individuals from a cave site is
   also not generalizable to the Bronze Age Indus region or all of India.

2. Tamil Nadu: 75,000 Markers, But No Published Dataset Yet
   In August, WION and the Deccan Herald reported on preliminary work by the Ancient DNA
   Lab of Madurai Kamaraj University. From the highly degraded remains of Konthagai
   (connected to Keeladi), Adichanallur, and Sivagalai, more than 75,000 genetic markers
   were analyzed; smaller marker numbers were reported for Adichanallur and Sivagalai. The
   preliminary statement is that the samples showed genetic proximity to present-day South Indian, Sri
   Lankan Tamil, and broader South Asian populations. Nine scholarly articles on
   ancestry, agriculture, diet, and textile production were announced for later in the year. (WION; Deccan Herald)
   Methodologically, a distinction must be made between markers and a published, authenticated genome dataset.
   Without raw data, contamination controls, radiometric dating,
   coverage values, population models, and peer-reviewed publication, neither
   "genetic continuity" in the strong sense nor a statement about the origin of Indo-Aryan
   languages can be derived. The report is nevertheless relevant because South India has been
   significantly less represented in aDNA research than the Northwest. It could in the future
   refine the history of southern populations and their relationships to Indus, Deccan, and Sri Lanka contexts.

3. Rajghat/BHU: New Samples from the Middle Ganges Plain
The Banaras Hindu University launched in August an interdisciplinary investigation of a
skeleton recovered during the Rajghat (Varanasi) excavations in 1957 and stored for decades.
Reports mention a possible age of approximately 1,000 to 2,800 years; the exact
age determination is still pending. Planned investigations include radiocarbon dating, mitochondrial
and – if preserved – Y-chromosomal DNA, stable isotopes, as well as osteological and
paleopathological examinations. One goal is comparison with Harappan/Rakhigarhi
samples to investigate the relationships between the Ganges and Indus regions. (ANI; Indian Express)
The project is a research promise, not a result. Even a successful genome
would initially only document the ancestry of this one person at a specific time.
A connection between genetic continuity, language change, and cultural
transformation would have to be established through many temporally and spatially distributed samples, as well as archaeology
and historical linguistics.

4. Rakhigarhi: New Skeletons and the Expectation of Future aDNA
   The ASI reported eight burials in Mound 7 for the 2025/26 excavation season. Three
   complete skeletons and other fragments were handed over to the AnSI in Kolkata; planned
   investigations include aDNA, stable isotopes, osteology, paleopathology, and
   environmental reconstruction. Collaborations with BSIP Lucknow, UCL, BHU, and other
   institutions are planned. At the time of reporting, no published genetic results are available
   from this new series. (Official report by Doordarshan/All India Radio)
   The significance lies in expanding the hitherto very narrow Harappan aDNA base. The
   published Rakhigarhi genome from 2019 comes from a single woman; it showed no
   detectable Steppe ancestry. This is a strong finding for this person and this
   time, but not proof that every Harappan group had the same composition.
   Conversely, a later detected Steppe component would not automatically prove a violent
   invasion.

5. Mohenjo-Daro: Earlier City Wall Dating
   New radiocarbon dates from material at the lower city wall of Mohenjo-Daro date
   the earliest reported construction phase to approximately 2700–2600 BCE; later wall phases
   extend at least until about 2200 BCE. The findings are associated with Kot-Diji phase pottery and
   several construction phases. The Archaeology Magazine summary describes the
   new dating as an indication of urban development several centuries older than in

   For the debate, this strengthens the chronology of a long, internally differentiated urbanization
   in the Indus region; however, it says nothing directly about the language of the city population or about the
   origin of later Indo-Aryan speakers. The frequent equation "older Indus city = Veda
   in very early times" is therefore an additional interpretative step, not a dating from the
   walls themselves.

Linguistic, Philological, and Historiographical Contributions
BMAC Substrate: Concrete Philological Dissent
David B. Buyaner discusses in **“Etymology of some Indo-Iranian cultural terms and the Indo-Iranian substratum theory: I. Indo-Iranian Hišti- / Hišta- ‘brick’” (2026, DOI:
10.30842/30346800.2026.2.1.7) the assumption, advocated by Witzel and others, that part of the
common Indo-Iranian cultural vocabulary derives from contacts with the BMAC culture.
Buyaner argues, using the word for "brick," that a plausible Indo-European
inherited word etymology from 'to dry' must be considered over a BMAC loanword analysis. (Article text)
The contribution illustrates what the linguistic dispute is actually about: not a
single "Aryan" gene, but reconstruction, sound laws, semantic plausibility,
contact zones, and the dating of common innovations. A counter-argument to Witzel's
substrate model is not automatically proof of OIT; the competing etymologies
must be tested against the entire lexical and archaeological corpus.
In the strict July 31–August 30 window, no new study published in Nature, Science, Cell, PNAS, or
a relevant major Indology journal was found that would immediately re-decide Vedic dating or
OIT/AMT. The search for August primarily found follow-up reports, popular classifications, and ongoing projects. As context, the Oxford presentation on the Ṛgveda question remains relevant: The widespread scholarly position places the immigration of Indo-Aryan
speakers in the second millennium BCE and understands it as a gradual process, not a

Public and Political Reception
The new Maharashtra textbook edition for Class 6 was controversially discussed in August.
Reports highlight that the depiction of the Vedic diet is formulated as "plant-based"
and an earlier reference to Varna, birth-based caste order, or social
inequality has been removed. This is not an aDNA study, but it shows how scientifically
uncertain or complex questions can be selectively simplified in school narratives.

In parallel, reporting on Rakhigarhi published in June 2026 and circulating further in August
is politically amenable: The phrase "Indus-Sarasvati" is read in parts of the
public debate as evidence of indigenous continuity. Research itself formulates
more cautiously: A missing Steppe finding in a Harappan sample and a later Steppe
component in present-day groups are compatible, without implying a "race" of the
Aryas or a simple identity of Harappans and Vedic composers. The public
polarization between "colonial invasion myth" and "proven indigenous civilization"
inadequately reflects this intermediate position.

State of the Debate
What the AMT/Migration Side Can Currently Explain Well

1. The 2019 Science analysis of 523 ancient individuals finds a temporally and geographically
   circumscribed entry of Steppe-related ancestry into South Asia's gene pool after the
   decline of the Indus Civilization; in modern populations, this proportion is
   variably high and often male-biased. (Narasimhan et al., Science)
2. The 2019 Cell genome from Rakhigarhi shows no detectable Steppe ancestry in
   this single Mature Harappan sample, thus supporting the sequence "Harappan
   component before later Steppe contribution." (Shinde et al., Cell)
3. Indo-Iranian proximity, reconstructed chariot/horse terminology, BMAC contacts, and the Swat
   sequence are interpreted in established historical linguistics and archaeology as
   consistent, but not entirely identical, evidence for mobility and language change.
   The conclusion is predominantly migration/interaction, not "invasion" in the Wheeler sense.

What OIT and Continuity Models Rightly Emphasize

1. The majority of the present-day Indian population is genetically predominantly derived from much
   older South Asian and Iranian-related components; a later Steppe component is
   a layer, not a complete population replacement.
2. Archaeological continuity in settlement, craftsmanship, agriculture, and local rituals
   contradicts a simple model in which a single wave of conquest replaces the Indus
   Civilization.
3. The equation of genes, language, culture, and "people" is inadmissible. Local continuity
   can coexist with limited migration and language change.
   OIT in the strict sense – India as the origin of the entire Indo-European
   language family – remains difficult to reconcile with the current combination of comparative linguistics,
   chronology, and aDNA. The critical question is therefore no longer meaningfully
   formulated as "invasion or no invasion," but rather: Which groups moved
   when, in what magnitude, through which contact zones, and how were languages and
   social institutions adopted?

Methodological Assessment
Representativeness: A single Rakhigarhi woman, ten Ladakh individuals, or a
Rajghat skeleton are not "Population India." Statements must be limited by location, time,
sex, social context, and preservation quality.
aDNA and Contamination: Highly degraded DNA requires authenticity and
contamination controls, transparent coverage, mitochondrial/Y-chromosomal
classification, and, if possible, replicated extractions. Preliminary marker counts from
press reports do not replace a published genome.
Admixture is not Language: Genetic influx can correlate with language change,
but does not prove which language the carriers spoke. Conversely, a language

can be spread by small elites, networks, and institutions without a
complete population replacement.
Chronology: Radiocarbon dates date samples or construction phases, not automatically
texts. The dating of Ṛgveda layers must integrate philological relative chronologies,
comparative linguistics, textual transmission, and material contexts.
R1a/L657: Haplogroups are paternal lineages, not ethnicities or "Aryan
genes." Their significance for AIT/AMT depends on temporally dated ancient Y-chromosomes,
phylogenetic branching, and population models; modern frequencies
alone do not decide the debate. The methodological warning against a direct
equation of DNA and historical identities is also central in Thapar's socio-historical

Sarasvati/Indus-Sarasvati: A paleochannel, a river history, or a settlement density
can illuminate regional environmental and economic history. It proves neither the
identity of the Rigvedic river nor the language of the groups living there without
independent dating and text/material correlation.
Publication Status: Ongoing projects (MKU, BHU, new Rakhigarhi samples) should remain
open until publication. Press releases, blogs, and politically positioned
essays are valuable for reception history but are not equally valid evidence alongside
peer-reviewed studies.

Open Questions

1. Will the new Rakhigarhi skeletons provide authentic, sufficiently deep genomes,
   and will they show homogeneous or regional variation within the Mature Harappan phase?
2. When exactly and through which intermediate populations did Steppe-related ancestry
   appear in Swat, Punjab, Haryana, and the Ganges Plain? Are there contemporary male Y-lines that
   can refine the frequently asserted R1a attribution?
3. Will MKU and Keeladi samples be published in a way that reveals radiocarbon dates,
   contamination controls, coverage, and comparison populations?
4. What will the Rajghat material say about the middle Ganges Plain in the first millennium BCE
   or in the early historical period – and how strongly can a single
   person be generalized?
5. Can new archaeological contexts better connect the transitions of Late Harappan, Cemetery-H,
   Painted Grey Ware, and early Iron Age regions without prematurely
   interpreting pottery styles as ethnicities?
6. Which Indo-Iranian loanword candidates actually meet the criteria for
   substrate words, and which can be explained by regular inherited word etymologies?
   Buyaner's brick analysis is a verifiable individual contribution, not a conclusive solution.
7. When will the Indus script be deciphered in a methodologically robust way? Without a reading, direct
   statements about the language of the urban Indus population remain speculative.
8. How will new aDNA findings be presented in textbooks, museum narratives, and political
   discourses so that continuity and mobility remain visible simultaneously?

Reference to Malinar Lecture (UZH)
The findings fit particularly well with a critical analysis of the construction of
"Hinduism": Neither "Hindu" nor "Arya" automatically denotes a
biologically homogeneous nation in the Bronze Age. aDNA shows stratifications and contact zones; archaeology
documents practices and settlements; philology reconstructs language stages; later
religious collective terms retrospectively categorize very different traditions. For the
lecture, therefore, the conceptual separation is central: Indus Civilization, Indo-Aryan
language history, Vedic ritual traditions, and modern Hinduism are interconnected
but not identical historical levels. The political charge of the terms
explains why the same data can be narrated as "continuity" or "migration."

multi-component mixture with a dominant "Indus Periphery"-related component
